HRS wins competition for new Bruderholz hospital

HRS as total contractor and the architectural team Itten+Brechbühl AG have won the competition for the partial new construction of the Cantonal Hospital Baselland (KSBL) on the Bruderholz site.

The ‘Beletage’ project aims to create a hospital as a house of life - not just a modern healthcare infrastructure, but also a home for healing, community and well-being. With its well thought-out architecture, the integration of nature and patient-orientated spaces, the new Bruderholz Hospital should become a symbol of hope and excellence for future generations.

The jury report particularly recognises the system of connections to the existing building, the zoning of the wards and the accessibility. The proposed polygonal layout of the structure would allow for flexible development and, with the concentrated arrangement of the access and supply cores, a great deal of scope for future changes. In addition, ‘a high degree of consideration will be given to the existing site (...) and at the same time (...) the additions will increase biodiversity and create functional added value’.

The project will be paused until the Basel government decides whether the two existing cantonal hospital sites in Liestal and Bruderholz should be retained or whether a new Basel cantonal hospital could be built in the Pratteln area.
