A new part of town for Zurich

The Europaallee stretches southwest from Zurich main station along the railway track. Until the beginning of this century, it formed part of the station area and served, among other things, as a transhipment point for the post office. Over a period of around 30 years, projects were drawn up for a new development next to and above the tracks. In 2004 the landowner SBB submitted a design plan, which was approved by the electorate of the city of Zurich in 2006 and subsequently completed.

The building in question had to comply with the ultimate aim of the building owner for the entire district, i.e. the creation of an urban space of high social, urban and architectural, economic and ecological quality, identity and functionality. The overheight ground floor stands on a two-storey underground car park and contains shops and restaurants. Two pentagonal towers are perfectly connected to the base construction. The 17-storey Gullturm offers 46 condominiums in various sizes. The sloping roofs of the towers are a landmark of building site G. From a distance, they appear like traditional hipped roofs.

Recognition for exceptional performance

HRS was the overall contractor for the project and handed it over on time. The company was honoured with the SBB Supplier Award 2015 for outstanding achievements. The building was erected using an elaborate concrete skeleton construction method, with some balustrades being pre-stressed. Slender, highly reinforced columns were used, and the towers were erected without scaffolding. The high-installed ceilings and the construction of movable ceiling connections for all walls required precise technical and aesthetic work. The green roof on the base construction was also unusual and challenging, appearing like an abstract work of art. The building complex is Minergie ECO-certified. The heating and hot water requirements are 100 per cent met by district heating. The roof surfaces of both towers are equipped with photovoltaic systems on the south side.
