Zum Englischen Gruss

The “Zum Englischen Gruss” project in Kreuzlingen involved the comprehensive renovation of a historically significant building, carried out with great care and respect for its history, and its adaptation for a new use. The goal of the project was to preserve the building’s heritage-protected structure while meeting contemporary requirements for living, working, and dining.

The renovation resulted in a versatile mixed-use development featuring restaurant, office, and residential spaces. The challenge was to reconcile modern usage requirements with the guidelines for historic preservation. Through careful planning and execution, the building’s historic character was preserved while simultaneously creating a sustainable vision for the future.

HRS took on project and construction management and oversaw the demanding transformation from planning through to completion. The project was recognized for its sensitive approach to the historic building fabric and received the Swiss Heritage Award in 2009. Today, “Zum Englischen Gruss” stands as a prime example of the successful combination of heritage preservation, architecture, and modern use.
